We moved to our small holding at Low Sutton in January 2007 having moved from The Old Vicarage in Darley near Harrogate where we provided bed and breakfast accommodation specialising in guests who had a similar passion to ours, namely a love of gardens. Our move to Masham meant we left behind a beautiful garden with fond memories to look back on.
Its good to have a challenge to focus the mind in ones life and Low Sutton certainly provided that challenge requiring a 3 year restoration of the house together with 6 acres of land to rescue from the clutches of mother nature. No garden existed at that time but with hard physical work and a small compact tractor a garden was born in early 2008 with the siting of a greenhouse and an arrangement of circular beds within a wheel configuration. This initial stage was sufficient for us to be supplied with vegetables that growing season. In 2009 the garden was completed with the introduction of a large fruit cage and further beds constructed to increase the potential to supply all our own fruit and vegetables. The garden abounds with herbaceous plants and the rustic fencing protecting the garden from rabbits are clothed in an abundance of roses and clematis. The grounds around the house have been landscaped with a retaining dry stone wall.
We pride ourselves that we have chosen to adopt a carbon friendly footprint approach to our lifestyle to reduce our impact on the planet.
In July of 2011 we opened our garden for the NGS ( National Garden Scheme ) with the help of the ladies from Fearby and Healey WI. We look forward to doing so again in 2012
